Behavior Based Safety (BBS) is an important aspect of safety work within the Bertschi Group. Accordingly, great importance was also attached to the introduction and implementation of the BBS system in Zhangjiagang, the newly opened Bertschi liquids hub in China. In order to train the team on site, our experienced and certified BBS expert of many years, Evi Jacobs, traveled to China for two weeks in July 2023.
Evi first came into contact with Bertschi in 2010 as a driver for a subcontractor working for Bertschi. At that time, she already had more than 20 years of experience as a driver in the tank container business. In 2013, she subsequently joined Bertschi and worked directly for our subsidiary in Antwerp. Through the years and various mandatory BBS trainings, Evi left a lasting impression on Bertschi’s head BBS trainer. Then in 2018, when a BBS trainer at the headquarters retired, it was clear that Evi would fit as his successor. She joined the BBS team in 2018 and, in addition to conducting mandatory BBS trainings, she also works as a dangerous goods safety advisor and eco-drive trainer. She has since been responsible for training all drivers in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, and Germany.
Upon arrival at the Bertschi Zhangjiagang Liquids Hub, Evi got right to work with the team on site. Together, they discussed and compared the different execution tools and related methods for the implementation of BBS, and Evi soon expressed her satisfaction with the current BBS system in China. Despite temperatures exceeding 40°C, she conducted detailed daily observations of the facilities, plant, equipment, personnel, and their workflows to gain a deeper understanding of BBS on site.

After the two weeks of observation and understanding, Evi praised the BBS system in Zhangjiagang. She believes that Zhangjiagang Hub can prioritize safety without any sacrifice. The safety standards in Zhangjiagang meet the highest global standards, which are maintained in all Bertschi hubs. Another important point observed was also the cleanliness in all premises and every location in the hub.
In addition, Evi has made some suggestions for improvement and looks forward to providing continuous professional support to the hub in Zhangjiagang in the future.
